January! Great time to reassess our goals and our intentions! What do you really want for yourself in 2018 and why? Why is the big question you have to ask yourself. Our wants and desires can be so fickle and change moment by moment. Is the goal you have for yourself going to change your life in a positive way? Will your life truly change if you meet this goal and will you be a happier, more at peace individual? To find lasting motivation to keep focused when trying to achieve new goals, you need to identify why you want to achieve this goal.
For example: If I say to myself “This year I want to lose 25 pounds” I might be motivated for about a week. Then temptation, boredom, and distractions come along and I get off track. So, how do you and I stay on track? We need to know why we want to lose 25lbs. How will your life change if you lose 25 pounds. The reasons vary with every individual. They can be anywhere from “So I can have more energy to play with my kids”, “I will be able to go off my medication” I will not be embarrassed to put on my bathing suit on our upcoming vacation. “I won’t feel depressed every time I look in the mirror” Whatever your reason is, write it out and form a purpose statement with it.
For example: In 2018 I want to lose 25 pounds so that I can get off my blood pressure medication, have more energy and feel good about myself when I look in the mirror. I want to learn to eat healthy without thinking about it. Like it is second nature to me.”
Now when temptation, boredom, and distractions come, ask yourself if this choice I’m making right now getting me closer to my goals or further away? Telling yourself you can’t have something only makes you want it more. Change the dialogue in you head to something positive. “I can have this, but will it bring me peace and happiness and help me reach my goals? Is it worth it?” Then repeat your purpose statement to yourself.
