Change is hard for everyone. Even if you are someone who thrives on change, the reason you probably like it is because of the stress it does cause. You enjoy the adrenaline rush you get when change happens. But for some people change can be frightening, difficult and seem downright impossible. We create habits that let our lives flow in a comfortable and predictable way. We may not like the way our lives are going, but we are content in the routine. In order to achieve new goals, whether they be health related, career focused or social, change needs to happen.
People change when they have a perceived need to change, they are ready to change, they have the necessary knowledge, skills, and tools, and they have a supportive environment. Most people recognize a need for change. Getting ready to change is a very large step from perceived to ready. Once you are ready, now you need knowledge, skills and tools and a supportive environment.
Another way to look at it is called Stages Of Change. Stages of change involve: Pre-contemplation, Contemplation, Preparation, Action, and Maintenance.
Pre-contemplation is the stage where you start to feel uncomfortable in your body, environment, or career. It is that nagging feeling or thought in the back of your mind that tells you “something’s not right”. Contemplation is the stage where you are fully aware you need to change, but you just aren’t sure where to begin. Preparation is the stage where you start seeking out help, advice, the necessary knowledge, skills, and tools you need to make changes. This is where a Health Coach can be of great value to you. A Health Coach is someone who gives you the necessary tools you need to make changes, achieve your goals and to maintain them. Action: that is the stage where you have either hired a Health Coach or have gotten the tools you need to make some serious changes. Now to keep these changes is place is called: Maintenance. Many of us have achieved goals and then fallen right back into old habits only to find ourselves worse off than when we started. A supportive environment is crucial in order to maintain your newly achieved goals.
